At the start of spring semester of my junior year, I headed on a Friday to Camp Thunderbird in Lake Wylie, South Carolina to attend the James E. Greer, Jr. Presidents’ Leadership Academy. Coming from a small colony of under 30 brothers that was hardly over a year old at the time, I was unsure how I would be received at the academy by the larger chapters. I felt many of the issues we were facing were not going to be relatable to other chapters that had been

around for more than 2 years.

Arriving at the academy and taking my seat was a moment I will never forget. As I looked around the room, I saw 38 chapters and colonies from across the United states represented in one room. Although they were 38 faces I did not recognize, there was something comforting about the situation knowing that we were all bonded together by our membership in ZBT. That night’s Candle Pass solidified that bond between us and I felt as if they could all be brothers in my own chapter. Over the next two days, the bonds of brotherhood between us only strengthened as we discussed in large and small group settings. What I felt were irrelevant issues to others when shared were met with helpful advice and tips from chapters and colonies that had faced similar issues. I was even able to provide advice on issues from my colony’s experience to chapters that had existed for 10+ years.

At the end of that weekend, I knew I had 38 brothers across the US that would be a support network throughout my year as president. What is truly my favorite thing about having attended the academy though is the fact that now, a few years after attending, I am still in contact with several of the brothers I met that weekend. I am even friends with several of their chapter brothers after having visited them at their chapters. That weekend was the first time I really felt a part of something larger than just my colony and is a moment I can look to, to remind me that regardless of what chapter/colony we were initiated into, we are all ZBT.
